1. He lived from 1931 to 1989.
2. He is one of the most famous afro-american dancer, choreographer, director and activist.
3. He founded the famous Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, one of the most successful companies in the world.
4. His work fused theatre, modern dance, ballet and jazz with black vernacular.
5. His choreographic masterpiece "Revelations" is recognized as one of the most popular and most performed ballets in the world. 
6. He received many awards (amongst others, one posthumously from Barack Obama).
7. The Alvin Ailey School was created in 1958 with the famed Martha Graham, to provide access to art and dance to under-resourced communities.
8. He was born in Texas, at the height of the Great Depression, in the violenty racist and segregated south. When he was young, Alvin Ailey was barred from interacting with mainstream society.
9. The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has performed for an estimated 23 million people in 48 states, as well as 71 countries on six continents. 
10. Robert Battle became Ailey's artistic director in 2011
